Their beads are often made from recycled glass, reflecting an eco-friendly and ingenious process. The glass is crushed and colored using natural pigments. The glass powder is then placed into clay molds and fired in traditional kilns. We expect to arrive in time for lunch. Kumasi is one of the largest cities in Ghana and, most importantly, the historical and spiritual capital of the former Ashanti Kingdom. This powerful nation was one of the most influential in Africa until the late 19th century, when the British conquered the territory and incorporated it into their Gold Coast colony.<\/p><p data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"1221\">We will visit the Cultural Centre, home to an impressive collection of traditional artworks displayed within a beautiful reproduction of an Ashanti house. Later, we will attend a traditional funeral ceremony. Mourners are dressed in striking red and black cloths. Although officially called a \u201cfuneral,\u201d the event is a vibrant and meaningful gathering, as the deceased is still regarded as a permanent member of the family. Friends and relatives come together in remembrance, while the chief arrives with his court under a large ceremonial umbrella. They are one of the most powerful and culturally rich ethnic groups in the country. Their society is known for its centralized political structure, led by the king, the Asantehene, and for its deeply rooted traditions.<\/p><p data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"857\">After breakfast, we will begin the day with a tour of Kumasi, starting with the Ashanti Royal Palace, which houses an impressive museum tracing the history of the kingdom. We will then continue to the Kumasi Central Market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa.
